We had a MCZ Red Compact 35 biomass installed with a separate 200L heatbank upstairs located in the 1st floor airing cupboard to replace the old oil boiler and accumulator installation.

The £2500 boiler grant and the 7 year RHi Payback for the pellets seem to be very good and basically are working out at free heat for 7 years, as long as it continues!, but there is very little real life info out there on them.

Gerkos perhaps which I read somewhere has issues with regulating heat & also require regular cleaning & emptying the ash pan every day or so - enough to put anyone off! - top of the range boilers take care of all that stuff but cost a fortune ie €12-14k.

Dec 13, 2011 · Or sell it and add a pellet furnace with ducting to move heat where its needed. The radiant from the furnace will keep the basement somewhat warm. Adding insulation to the basement is optional with the furnace. But a must if you try heating with a stove! Edit: You already have a boiler, SO there is another good option. Add a pellet boiler to that.

I believe the boiler is a lost cause now since it leaks, has severe corrosion and the tankless coil has gone. My thinking is this: * Replace the boiler with a direct equivalent i.e. tankless basic boiler. * In winter run the boiler to keep the house at, say, 60 deg. * Use pellets/wood to supplement the boiler in the evenings.
